Here’s our second myth: “Citrus oils are toxic to cats.”
The actual truth is that we have not found any cases of citrus toxicity in cats.
D-limonene is a main constituent in citrus oils. It is a natural component of citrus oils, but it can also be produced synthetically.
In 1998, cats were found that had been sprayed with insecticide at 15 times the recommended dose (at a very high concentration). A study of these cats found that the spray, though not Essential Oil-based, contained d-limonene, and was most likely developed in a lab.
Side effects of drooling, shivering, and muscle tremors lasted for about five hours, and the cats recovered on their own. No deaths occurred even with the very high concentration.
Exposure to d-limonene at very high doses, especially for use against fleas, did demonstrate some skin irritation.
Use of our Essential Oils in recommended dilutions is safe for cleaning, diffusing, and more. They are also great for safely repelling cats from plants since they don’t prefer citrus oils.
CITRUS PLANT REPELLENT SPRAY RECIPE
• 20 drops Lemon Essential Oil
• 16 oz. Glass or High-Grade Plastic Spray Bottle
• Distilled Water
Add Essential Oils to glass or high-grade plastic spray bottle and top with Distilled Water. Shake well and spray on plants.
